PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Winter has arrived at last, and if you've been down already, isn't it good to have had skis on again, or your board as the case may be. Not an early season for snow unfortunately but as I write this more is falling.

Many of you have been checking bed availability on the Internet with great success. Don't forget the web page shows beds vacant and not beds full, and do not be afraid to e-mail or phone Margaret to put yourself on the waiting list as beds often become available. There are still plenty of beds available in September, and recently some have become free in August so get in quick.

The end of season party is now finalised and promises to be a big night. This year is the Club's 40th Birthday so let's celebrate with as many party goers as possible. After last year's venue popularity we have again decided to hold it at North Wollongong Surf Club. Check inside for details and mark it on your calendar.

One unexpected surprise we have recently been advised is that all lodges and public accommodation premises will need to help pay for the new sewerage system to be installed. The prime reason for a new plant and pumping station is to handle the additional effluent from the extra 1320 beds being added to Perisher Blue commencing possibly next year. Our club will be up for an additional $20,000!!! SLOPES will be negotiating with the National Parks on behalf of all of the lodges but we thought it prudent to give some warning before next year's AGM. This is yet another example of why we need to steadily increase annual subscriptions as we do, and will now need to review next year's booking costs. Let's hope we have good bookings this year to help cover this "unbudgeted item!"

Finally, I must apologise for an important piece of information I forgot to mention in May Cold Facts. At the Annual General Meeting another Honorary Life Member was elected, the first female to be elected and, yes, you guessed it, our tireless Booking Officer Margaret Fletcher. Congratulations, Margaret, and many thanks on behalf of all Club members for the many years of hard work you have dedicated to the successful running of the club, which you are still happy to continue.

Happy skiing and may we wish soft powder to you all.

Jarvis Fletcher

FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN

Race Update - July 2001

The season seams to be stuck in second gear but I'm sure that big July dump will have arrived by the time you read this. I have just returned from the lodge after spending a few days with our young racers and their wonderful parents.

A total of 11 juniors enjoyed some basic race training through the Smiggins Ski School during the 2 week of the July holidays and I know they enjoyed it. Mike Edmondson and Atta weaved their magic with 10 keen Cross Country juniors and I'm sure we will eventually score here - the talent is there.

The advanced groups were coached by Darren Hubscher and Alison Bombardier. Andy Burford is building a house and was not available but hopefully he will be back next year. We had 9 juniors in this programme and all went well after a few problems caused by a lack of snow and bad weather. The next Junior training week begins on August 20th.

Don't forget the Senior Interclub on August 18th and our champs on August 25th followed by the Smiggins Bowl on September 1st and the Junior Interclub on September 8th. We need as many racers as possible in these events. Tim Edmondson will be racing in the Interclub X/C for us ( Oh ! what a feeling ). Thanks Tim.

See you all in the snow

Tim Lee

IAC Junior Race Training Program gets results.

The effectiveness of the IAC junior skier program was shown again during the Sydney Zone Interschool Alpine team races at Thredbo on Saturday 21/7/01.

Krista and Annika Sturday skied in their respective Division 1 (years 11,12) and Division 3 (years 7,8) teams for their school - Riverside Girls High. Annika's team did not qualify for a result with only 2 valid times on the team's first run (3 out of 4 needed), however, Krista's Division 1 team finished with a creditable 5th place out of 17 teams and will advance to the State event in August. Although the race is a team event, both the IAC juniors completed their runs with Krista finishing in 12th place out of  63 starters and Annika 11th out of 84 starters.

The IAC training has given these girls the confidence to talk their teachers into supporting the entry of their school teams into this event. It also gave them the skill and ability to successfully negotiate their way through the tough race courses that were a real challenge to all of the skiers present and to perform with solid results.

Many thanks to the club committee for your commitment to the program and a special acknowledgment for Tim Lee's effort and vision in pushing for and managing this excellent development program.

Geoff Sturday

OTHER NEWS

E-mail addresses

We are collecting e-mail address of members so we can mail out specials on accommodation and urgent announcements etc. With more and more people having access to the Internet we are also now reducing the actual number of paper copies of 'Cold Facts' we need to mail out. This month, for the first time, about 25 people have opted not to receive a hard copy issue of 'Cold Facts'. This, in turn, saves the planet's resources and club cost associated with production and mailing. Savings and convenience on all fronts.

Summer usage

With the major renovations now over the lodge is pretty well available all year 'round. Anyone who has not spent time down at the mountains during the "off season" has not fully appreciated their membership of the lodge. There are many activities to keep you amused at any time of the year. Start thinking of when you want to go. The lodge often gets booked out during some of the school holiday and long weekend periods but there are many other times available and 32 beds to fill, at very reasonable rates, even for guests, so get in soon to avoid disappointment.

Half price subscriptions

Did you know that if you spend 12 months, or longer, overseas then you are entitled to pay only half the normal annual subscription? If/when applying for this, documentary evidence may be required to support the application.

Club constitution

With the recent influx of new members we have been handing out copies of the club's constitution. Any longer standing member who wishes to get hold of a copy of this should contact John O'Donnell Jnr on 02-4229-2103. I think there are quite a few copies of 'Silver Tracks' available as well if you're looking for a unique gift for someone.

Shuttle services

For those of you who like to drive your car right into the park it seems that the Sawpit Service Station has finally been shut down, however, Mick Taylor, better known as "Sawpit Mick" will still be operating a shuttle service from Sawpit Creek on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. He will be based at Sawpit on these days. Monday to Thursday Mick is based in Jindabyne but is happy to operate the service for bookings on these days.

Mick also offers a service where he will drive you up to the ski fields in your own car, weather, chains and space in your car permitting and drive the car back to Sawpit. This is quite attractive when you consider the alternative of parking at Bullocks Flat, shuffling all your gear onto the ski tube, shuffling it all off again and then getting it to the lodge and vice versa at the end of your stay. Bookings can be made by contacting Mick on Mobile: 0412-045-894 or 02-6456-2321. Mick will also be carrying chains on board the bus for emergency hire. Other transport providers running shuttle services on the Kosciuszko Road include:

Snowy Mountains Hire Cars 02-6456-2957 / 0408-484-360
