PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
After a late start it was good to see the snow arrive eventually in August. Once the fluffy white stuff seriously began to fall there was some great skiing to be had so we hope you made the most of it. Unfortunately the late start meant a lot of empty beds in June, which have caused our yearly bed nights to be below average, but the balance sheet should still be in fair shape.
We hope you have decided to come to this year's 40th Annual End of Season Party at North Wollongong Surf club. Last year was a big night and we expect even more to this year's event. Please organise yourself and friends and catch up with your friends from the Lodge for one last time in 2001. Kari Dileva is awaiting your call or mailed booking form, which you will find in this issue.
As usual we have more maintenance to perform on the Lodge this summer. With the dedicated effort on those fantastic bathrooms which were completed last summer there were many minor jobs that were delayed until this year. We would appreciate your help for a weekend wherever possible, so please call Steve Ainge or Phil Warren. You will find contact details following.
Another big effort by our ski racers this winter has been rewarded with some good results in the various interclub events. Tim Lee has numerous articles to follow showing the successes of particularly our junior racers in recent weeks. Most of these families made the journey to Smiggins for four weekends in a row, many with a week to begin with, to participate in club and interclub races. This is appreciated, as we know it is a long trek and doesn't come cheaply, so thank you to all those involved.
Hopefully we'll see you at the Party on 13 October in Wollongong. For those out of town, why not make a night of it and stay at a local's house, otherwise there is information inside on Wollongong accommodation close by. It would nice to see a big roll-up for the celebration.
Jarvis Fletcher
FROM THE BOOKING OFFICER
2550+ winter beds so far, which is not too bad, considering the very slow start. Still heaps of snow down there, and there are still beds available until Monday 1st October when the lodge closes for winter bookings. Lodge re-opens for summer bookings on Thursday 4 October. Jarvis will field all enquiries from 27 September until 20 October.

FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN
Race Update - September 2001
The season of 2001 slips slowly into history a rather strange season with not a lot of action until well in to August. Those keen racers who were in the mountains for that special week of white gold will long remember those few days.
So! Enough babble; the junior race training progressed in a positive manner in August, we did have a few problems with Darren not being available and Alison being injured and hence also unavailable. Two Canadian coaches, RON and DAVE, took over and proved very good and popular with our juniors.
Senior Interclub Race:
We scored exactly the same position as 2000, which was 3rd. I was not at the race day due to illness but I feel there are a few questions yet to be asked and answered about the event and I'll leave it at that.
Our racers - Jarvis, Johnno, Nicholas, Karina, Phil, Tim Ed, Atta and others did their all but it was not to be.
This is a very strongly contested event! we need the best racers the club has if we are ever to win this event back. I, in particular, ask our YOUNG SENIORS IN WHOM THE CLUB INVESTED A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF CAPITAL to give it some serious thought for 2002. We know we have the racers to get the job done - so let's do it.
Junior Interclub Race:
I congratulate all our juniors and their parents on a job well done. Once again we showed the other clubs which club has the top juniors.
Our club came in 1st in the Giant Slalom with, Gavan Fletcher, Lucy Ainge, and Annika Sturday leading the charge and many of our other juniors well up with the front runners.
The X/C was a fantastic race with wonderful efforts by Annika Sturday, Andrew Brown, Andrew Dengate, Lyndsey Ainge, Lauren Di Milia, Lucy Ainge and Brittany Ainge.
Our team came in 3rd and I predict in 2002 with the same team they will come in 1st as some of the other clubs loose their 17 year olds. We will see!!
The Smiggins Bowl:
Yes, I know we did have a rather busy few weeks in late August / September and we will try to change things for next year.
The Bowl like our other races was run in bad weather but all in all it was a great weekend but alas we, as a club, slipped a little with loosing both the Bowl and the Shield to Snow Country and they took pride in letting us know that. I once again urge our younger senior races to support these events in 2002 and REINSTALL THOSE TROPHIES IN THE CORRECT CLUB.

IAC Championships:
AT LAST A SUNNY DAY ! and boy what a day. Perfect snow, great challenging courses and a bunch of hyped up racers. Without a doubt the standard of racing in the club is soaring and that goes for all ages.
Slalom:
The battle was on with Johnno Hooper and Brendan Bayly, two of our young hot shots, blasting themselves out of contention early in the piece.
The battle finally came down to Jarvis Fletcher, Nicholas Brown and Phil Warren in the men's with Jarvis just 'nicking' it from Nick.
The ladies was fought out with the winner being Karina Brown followed by Krista Sturday and Narelle Di Milia.

Enjoy your summer

E-mail addresses
We are still collecting e-mail address of members so we can mail out specials on accommodation and urgent announcements etc. Anyone else who wants to join in with the new technology please send your e-mail address to either of the following addresses. Michael.j.dileva@bhpbilliton.com or iacski@bigpond.com advising that you want to be added to our list. Please advise also if you are happy to receive COLD FACTS by e-mail as well. We will still mail out the hard copy if you wish even if you are on the e-mail list.
Summer usage
With the major renovations now over the lodge is pretty well available all year 'round. Did you know that we have a 32 bed lodge that is vacant for most of the year. 32 (beds) times 365 (days) = 11,680 bed nights. While we get excited about 2500 beds during the season the bulk of available beds are going to waste. There are very few times during the year now when access to stay at the club is restricted. Anyone who has not spent time down at the mountains during the "off season" has not fully appreciated their membership of the lodge. There are many activities to keep you amused at any time of the year. Check out the Perisher Blue summer web site at http://www.perisherblue.com.au/summer and start thinking of when you want to go. The lodge often gets booked out during some of the school holiday and long weekend periods but there are many other times available and 32 beds to fill, all year 'round, at very reasonable rates, even for guests, so get in soon to avoid disappointment.
40th Annual Party
By now you will have received in the mail a very colourful flyer with a booking form for the upcoming event included. No doubt you have it tucked away ready to fill in and send. Well, just in case you've mislaid it we have a copy here for you again (on the back cover). If you're planning to use the accommodation options below make sure you copy them or make your arrangements before mailing them off on the back of the form.
