Sverre Kaaten Nordic Shelter Update May 2008
A date for your social diaries; Sunday 10 August at NoonIt is the first weekend of Cross Country Week and the elite skiers amongst you will be planning for the Australian Senior/Masters 10/15 Freestyle Championships on that day. Many of the rest of us will be thinking more about the Boonoona Open. But the highlight of the day, especially for a large crew of workers, will occur between these events..... the Official Opening of the bigger, better Nordic Shelter. The Hon. Graham West MP, Minister for Sport and Recreation, provider of a great deal of money for the project, and Mr Steve Whan MP Monaro, our constant supporter, will both be there to do the honours. We lookforward to a large crowd of cross country skiers to show their appreciation and to help celebrate. For those who can’t get enough celebration on Sunday, the UnOfficial Opening will be held the following night at the Night Relays. Candlelight Dinner. We are hoping for a big turnout for two reasons, to fill up the big new spaces and to raise funds for the finishing-off. All offers of food and assistance on the night are welcome. Planning for celebrations and VIPs presupposes that the building is ready for occupation. Barring surprises and disasters, we will get there. Landscaping is ongoing. The original building will be cleaned, painted, set up and opened for the first skiable snow. The new waxroom, thanks to Wayne Pethybridge?s engineering, is a wonder. The other new areas have been painted, carpeted and kitchens installedwith plumbing, electrics, tiling and the steel deck nearing completion. The new areas will be opened to the public as soon as they are signed off by NSW Planning, hopefully by the first of July. As you can guess, work is proceeding at a somewhat frantic pace. We still need work partiers. As always, accommodation is available courtesy of Canberra Alpine Club. If you wish to get a donation tax receipt for this financial year, send your form in ASAP and we will get it finalised before 30 June. What is in a name? With the new building looking so real and usable now, the question ofwhat to call it has come up. Sverre Kaaten will always remain a historical part of the name, but does 'Nordic' reflect modern terminology and describe its function to people who aren?t familiar with the Nordic connection and just know the sport as cross country skiing? Does 'Shelter' reflect the building?s new and grander proportions? Is the old name familiar and comfortable, unlike some aspects of the old building, and likely to be used anyway? Some suggestions have been made, for example the Cross Country Ski Centre, although this name may be required for a commercial XC facility in the foreseeable future. We would like your comments and suggestions. It may seem like a minor consideration compared to the hard work that has been done. But a name is important and something has to go on the signs and the paperwork. Please send us a note withyour thoughts. February 2008 Letter to Nordic Shelter Supporters from Bert Sheridan
I hope you had an enjoyable break over the Christmas/New Year period and are ready for the challenges of 2008. The builders at the shelter have made some real progress over January. We have spent $147,000 to date and are just making our first claim to the dept of S & R for our grant monies. We are on budget but only just. Any unforseen items of expenditure will tip us into the red but we will let you know if that is likely to happen. All should be clear by the end of February. A working bee is planned for the coming weekend, Feb 9 & 10. Let Peter Cunningham know if you require accomodation - 62999641 or email peter.cunningham@countryenergy.com.au. Accomodation for this coming weekend is in Jindabyne, the Perisher CAC lodge is booked out but they have kindly made the Jindabyne lodge available. We will be having regular weekends at the shelter from now on. I will let you know the dates after Feb 10. Work to be covered this coming weekend include electrical installation and landscaping. Bring a sturdy rake and some gloves. |
